what do the metals mean?
sterling silver – sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% (hence being stamped .925) silver and 7.5% of another metal to add strength and durability. sterling silver will not flake or peel like plating can. sterling sliver generally does not cause an allergic reaction and is nickel free. sterling items can tarnish but they are easily made to look new by polishing them with a polishing square. to protect your sterling items, we recommend storing it in the plastic bag that it came in with the anti-tarnish square. it’s also recommended to take off your jewelry when you shower or swim.
gold filled – gold filled jewelry is composed of a solid layer of gold bonded with pressure and heat to another metal such as brass. this process makes a gold filled item look very similar to 14k gold jewelry but for a lesser price. the gold will not flake or peel. some people can have an allergic reaction to the copper in gold filled items resulting in the jewelry leaving a mark on the skin (we’ve found this to be rare in regard to our customers purchasing gold filled items).
rose gold filled – rose gold filled items are created using a similar process as gold filled, but using another metal such as copper to create the pink color.
copper – copper is a soft metal which is orange in color. some people can have an allergic reaction to copper resulting in the jewelry leaving a mark on the skin.
aluminum – aluminum is a soft, lightweight silver toned metal.
brass – brass is a gold-toned metal, created with copper and zinc.
